Wie was Charles F. Ward?
Captain Charles Francis Ward werd geboren in 1884 in Zuid-Afrika en was de zoon van Charles en Marjorie Ward.
Hij studeerde aan het Marlborough College tussen april 1898 en maart 1901. En aan de RMA Woolwich. Hij ging in 1903 de Royal Military Academy in en later voegde zich toe aan de Royal Field Artillery.
Hij werd in december 1906 Lieutenant en in oktober 1914 Captain. Tijdens zijn dienst in het Zuid-Afrikaans leger, werd toegewezen aan de 85th Battery van de Royal Field Artillery en in het Indisch leger in de BB Battery van de Royal Horse Artillery.
Tijdens de oorlog, werd hij ingezet in zowel Frankrijk als ook in België aan de Ieperboog met de 75th Battery Royal Field Artillery. Daar zou hij gedood worden door een sluipschutter op 15 mei 1915, tijdens een verkenningsopdracht. Mogelijk nabij de Frezenberg.
Zijn lichaam werd nooit terug gevonden. Hij staat vermeld op de Menenpoort op paneel 5.
Who was Charles F. Ward?
Captain Charles Francis Ward was born in 1884 in South Africa and was the son of Charles and Marjorie Ward.
He studied at Marlborough College between April 1898 and March 1901. And at the RMA Woolwich. He entered the Royal Military Academy in 1903 and later joined to the Royal Field Artillery.
He was in December 1906 Lieutenant and Captain in October 1914. During his service in the South African army, he was assigned to the 85th Battery of the Royal Field Artillery and in the Indian army in the BB Battery of the Royal Horse Artillery.
During the war, he was employed in both France and Belgium on the Ypres Salient with the 75th Battery Royal Field Artillery. There he would be shot down by a sniper on May 15, 1915, during a reconnaissance mission. Mogelijk nabij de Frezenberg.
His body was never found. He is remembered on the Menin Gate on panel 5.
