Wie was Maurice Battenberg?

Maurice Victor Donald Battenberg werd geboren op

3 oktober 1891 te Balmoral Castle in Aberdeen in

Groot-Brittannië, die ook gekend is als Prins Maurice van Battenberg. Hij werd onderscheiden met de Royal

Victorian Order en was een afstammeling van de Britse

Koninklijke Familie. Namelijk een kleinzoon van koningin

Victoria en tevens ook haar jongste kleinkind. Zijn vader

was Prince Henry van Battenberg, de zoon van prins

Alexander van Hessen-Darmstadt en Julie Therese

gravin Hauke, zijn hofdame. Zijn moeder was prinses

Beatrice von Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha, de vijfde dochter en

het jongste kind van koningin Victoria en prins-gemaal

Albert. Omdat zijn vader kind was uit een morganatisch

huwelijk kreeg Prince Henry van Battenberg zijn titel prins

van Battenberg van zijn moeder, die door de Russische

Tsaar Nicolaas tot prinses werd bevorderd.

Als zodanig was Maurice vanaf zijn geboorte aangeduid als "His Serene Highness Prince Maurice of Battenberg".

In het Verenigd Koninkrijk, werd hij

"His Highness Prince Maurice of Battenberg

genoemd". Als jongste van de vier kinderen leek

Maurice het meest op zijn vader. Deze stierf toen de

prinsslechts vier jaar was, dezelfde leeftijd van zijn

moeder waarop haar eigen vader Albert stierf.

Hij was zijn moeders lieveling. Hij werd opgeleid aan

Lockers Park Prep School in Hertfordshire.

Daarna bezocht hij het prestigieuze Wellington

College en was lid van het Huis Benson. De jonge

prins diende in de Eerste Wereldoorlog als luitenant

in het King's Royal Rifle Corps en werd gedood in

dienst in de Ieperboog op 27 oktober 1914.

Hij werd begraven op de Ypres Town Cemetery,

bij de overgang tussen de hedendaagse oude

gemeentelijke begraafplaats en nieuwe

gemeentelijke begraafplaats van Ieper en de

Ypres Town Cemetery Extension, gemarkeerd met

een prachtige graf vol met witte kiezels. Na 1918

moesten Britse edelen met een Duitse achternaam deze verengelsen. De nakomelingen van Battenberg

veranderden hun achternaam in "Mountbatten".

Prins Philip, de echtgenoot van de Britse koningin, is

de zoon van een neef van Maurice.

Who was Maurice Battenberg?

Maurice Victor Donald Battenberg was born on

October 3, 1891 at Balmoral Castle in Aberdeen in Britain,

he is also known as Prince Maurice of Battenberg.

He was awarded with the Royal Victorian Order and was a

descendant of the British Royal Family. Namely,

a grandson of Queen Victoria as well as her

youngest grandchild. His father was Prince Henry of

Battenberg, the son of Prince Alexander of Hesse-Darmstadt

and Julie Therese Countess Hauke, his lady. His mother was

Princess Beatrice von Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha, the fifth

daughter and youngest child of Queen Victoria and

Prince Consort Albert. Child because his father was a

morganatic marriage of Prince Henry of Battenberg got his

title Prince of Battenberg from his mother, who by the

Russian Tsar Nicholas was promoted to princess.

As such, it was Maurice from birth referred to as His Serene Highness Prince Maurice of Battenberg. In the UK, he was named His Highness Prince Maurice of Battenberg. As the

youngest of four children Maurice seemed

most like his father. His father died when the

prince was only four years, the same age his

mother had that her own father Albert died.

He was his mother's favorite. He was educated

at Lockers Park Prep School in Hertfordshire.

Then he visited the prestigious

Wellington College and was a member of the

House Benson. The young prince served in the

First World War as a lieutenant in the

King's Royal Rifle Corps and was killed in

service in the Ypres Salient on October 27, 1914. He was buried in the Ypres Town Cemetery, at the transition between the old municipal cemetery and contemporary new municipal cemetery of

Ypres and the Ypres Town Cemetery Extension.

His grave is filled with white pebbles. After 1918

British nobles had to Anglicize there German name.

The descendants of Battenberg changed their

name to "Mountbatten". Prince Philip, the husband

of the Queen, is the son of a cousin of Maurice.
