Wie was William H. Hewitt?
William Henry Hewitt werd geboren op 19 juni 1884 in Copdock in Suffolk in Groot-Brittannië. Hij besliste om te emigreren naar Zuid-Afrika in 1905 en lijfde zich in in de South Africa Marechaussee voor een jaar om nadien overgeplaatst te worden naar de Natal Police waar hij drie jaar dienst deed.
Na het uitbreken van de oorlog, Hewitt, hoewel een goede ruiter, lijfde zich in op 33 jarige leeftijd als lance-corporal in de 2nd South African Light Infantry, op 24 december 1915. Zijn regiment arriveerde in Frankrijk in juli 1916.
Tijdens de Slag om Passendale, behoorde de eenheid tot de South-African Brigade van de 9th (Scottish) Division onder bevel van Major-General H.T. Lukin.
Hij werd gedecoreerd met de Victoria Cross wanneer hij op 20 september 1917, tijdens de Slag om de Meenseweg (V Corps, Fifth Army), ten oosten van Ieper, een pill-box aanviel met zijn sectie om een doorbraak te veroorzaken. Het lukte het hen nauwelijks. William geraakte gewond, maar zette koppig door. Hij kon de pill-box bereiken en wanneer hij de bom wou plaatsen, geraakte hij opnieuw gewond en deze keer aan zijn arm. Het lukte hem uiteindelijk om de bom te plaatsen.
William Hewitt werd onderscheiden met de Victoria Cross door Koning George V in Buckingham Palace op 16 januari 1918.
Hij overleefde de oorlog en stierf op 7 december 1966 te Cheltenham, Gloucestershire op een leeftijd van 82 jaar.
Who was William H. Hewitt?
William Henry Hewitt was born on June 19, 1884 in Copdock in Suffolk in Great Britain and was educated at Framlingham College. He decided to emigrate to South Africa in 1905, joining the South Africa Constabulary for one year and then transferring to the Natal Police in which he served for three years.
After the outbreak of the First World War Hewitt, although a good horseman, enlisted into the 2nd South Africa Light Infantry on 24th December 1915 as a lance-corporal . His regiment arrived in France for active service in July 1916.
During the Battle of Passchendaele, the unit belongs to the South-African Brigade of the 9th Scottish) Division under the command of Major-General HT belonged Lukin
He was decorated with the Victoria Cross when he at the east of Ypres, attacked a pill-box on 20 September 1917, during the Battle of the Menin Road (V Corps, Fifth Army), with his section to make a breakthrough. It barely managed them. William was injured, but continued with his attack. He could reach the pill-box and when he wanted to place the bomb he again get hit and this time on his arm. He managed finally to place the bomb.
William Hewitt was decoroated with the Victoria Cross by King George V at Buckingham Palace on the 16th January 1918.
He survived the war and died on 7 December 1966 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire at the age of 82 years.
